Coral

Like pearl, coral is one of the few famous organic gems. Made from the discarded shells of marine invertebrates, polished coral (also known as calcium carbonate) was treasured by sailors as a charm against rough seas. Ancient Romans and Persians used it to cure madness and impart wisdom, and, in India, it was ingested in powdered form as an aphrodisiac.
